On Safari in South Africa

Soccer City still needs some work

Soccer City is the crown jewel of the 2010 World Cup. The 90,000+ stadium is going to host the opening and closing matches of the tournament, with a handful of other games sandwiched in between. While the interior is done, the exterior leaves a lot to be desired.

Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium

One of the five new stadiums built for 2010, Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium is the prize possession of Port Elizabeth. The industrial town on South Africa’s southern coast was referenced as the Detroit of South Africa — a backhanded compliment if I ever heard one.

Here’s some video shot from the interior.

Video: Khayelitsha from the van

I shot this while driving out of the township of Khayelitsha. Not the best quality (obviously) but it gives a good idea of the kind of conditions you see in most townships.

Reporting from South Africa

The last two weeks I spent in South Africa were some of the busiest of my life. Along with meeting great people, I got a chance to do some reporting from the host of the 2010 World Cup. Here are some preliminary links to everything I wrote thus far:

Video: Panoramic from Table Mountain

Of the five cities that I visited in South Africa, Cape Town was by far and away my favorite. Perhaps this was due more to how similar it was to Sydney, which currently sits as my favorite place in the world. Whatever it was, the kind-hearted people, breathtaking view from Table Mountain, or just the fact it was on the coast.

I shot this panoramic video from the top of Table Mountain — give you an idea of where you should go if you’re heading there during the World Cup.

Preliminary Photos from South Africa

Here’s a look at some early photos from my trip:

Video: Green Point Stadium and Surrounding area

I recently had the great pleasure of getting a World Cup preview down in South Africa. Plenty of videos and pictures, as well as some articles written from on location available down there. Check out the short video shot of Cape Town’s new stadium, Green Point Stadium.

Forgive the low quality – it was shot on a point and shoot camera. Much more content on the way.
